Scaling 32 bit ASP.NET Application to a 64 bit OS Platform | Mailbag Discussion

Well, its time for some discussion. Few minutes back, one of the reader ‘Om’ had asked this below question –

“I’ve small query related to application compatibility. We have a SaaS based product hosted on group of windows 2003 server standard edition (32bit). To scale up further we upgraded RAM of few systems to 8GB from 4GB. But since 32-bit version of windows 2003 does not support more than 4 GB of RAM , we have to switch to different edition. Now we have the option of either trying 32-bit Datacenter edition(cost around 3000 bucks per system per month extra by our host provider). or 64 bit Standard edition (with no extra cost).

So my query is that how much effort is needed (if any) in migrating a 32 bit application to a 64 bit OS platform? Apart from app we have bunch of WCF services?”

General Google How-to

Avoid / Stop Google Analytics Script Monitor your Browser

Few days back, I was talking to one of my friend about how powerful and useful Analytics tool is. I was explaining on the capabilities it provides me (as a webmaster) on analyzing my readers and statistics. That’s when, i could feel a sense on un-comfort in him. When asked, he was not comfortable revealing about the activities on the web no matter how anonymous the data is!

Well, Google Analytics is a web analytics tool that helps website owners understand how visitors engage with their website. Google Analytics customers can view a variety of reports about how visitors interact with their website so they can improve it. Google Analytics collects information anonymously. It reports website trends without identifying individual visitors!

These statistics are very vital for a webmaster. For example: If most of the readers are from India, then it would make sense for the webmaster/author to even include Indian Rupees currency when he writes about a product in his article. i.e.,  Product x – 100 USD (Rs. 5000/- approx)

Google Analytics - Overview
A sample Google Analytics Report - Image Source: Google Analytics About page

Analytics  is a static piece of javascript that tells your visitors browsers to report back to Google that they’ve visited your site. Google Analytics uses first-party cookies to track visitor interactions. These cookies are used to store information, such as what time the current visit occurred, whether the visitor has been to the site before, and what site referred the visitor to the web page. Browsers do not share first-party cookies across domains.

Google Analytics only has access to what your visitors web browser has access to. For eg: If a user is looking at or updating their bank account details none of that info would actually be sent back to Google. Just a record of the pages they visited to complete that transaction.

Google understands that not all readers want to be part of this program and they are making it easier by releasing a tool which would opt out your Browser from monitoring. This web browser add-on can be installed on your browser to disable getting tracked by third party websites.

Download the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on plugin here

Once you install the Addon, you will get this below confirmation message –

Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on

The Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on is available for Internet Explorer (versions 7 and 8), Google Chrome (4.x and higher), and Mozilla Firefox (3.5 and higher).

How to Make Websites Indic Aware and accept Indic Inputs?

The Microsoft Indic Language Input Tool (erstwhile Akshara) is now available for developers to use in their websites.  By including a bunch of scripts, web developers would now be able to accept Indic Input for their websites.  This transliteration feature helps in places where we need to capture information in the local language without having the respective keyboard.

The Indic Input tool is also available as a desktop version for use with Word, Excel and pretty much any input in Windows 7, Vista and XP.

Developers can also check here to include this feature in their own websites (available Support for Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu).

Harish Ranganathan, one of the Application platform Evangelists at Microsoft has written a detailed post on how to make your website Indic Aware in his blog. I would highly recommend you read his article!

Best Practices Google Tools

Website Optimization – Want to know what readers are seeing in your website?

Browser Size is a tool from Google Labs, which provides you visualization of browser window sizes for people who visit your website. This is useful for ensuring that important parts of a page’s user interface are visible by a wide audience. Knowing this fact would encourage the designer to move the most important information much higher in the page so it can be seen without scrolling. For example, the “90%” contour means that 90% of people visiting the website have their browser window open to at least this size or larger.

The sizes represented in this contour are client area sizes, not browser window sizes. This means they represent the size of the browser without the title bar, toolbars, status bars, etc., and thus give a true representation of how much content can be seen by a particular segment of the Web-using population.

Check the Browser Size Tool here!!! –

To view your own Web site with this same visualization overlaid on it, simply type its URL into the “Enter URL here” textbox at the top of the window and click Go. As you move the mouse around the window, you will see a transparent rectangle following the mouse pointer. This feature allows you to interact normally with the page you’re examining even though it has a graphical overlay atop it.

You could choose either a Opaque layout map or even set the translucent effect!
