Fixing Code Compatibility Issues with Office 2010 Compatibility Inspector

The Microsoft Office 2010 Compatibility Inspector compares existing (legacy) code against the Office 2010 object model by using a text search for known properties and methods that have changed. You can run the tool against specific projects. You also have the option to mark those areas in the code where text search has identified a possible object model match. The comment will include description of what was found along with possible remediation link to online content or help.

The key features of the Office Code Compatibility Inspector include the following:

  • It consists of four add-ins that load, one add-in per application, in Excel 2010, PowerPoint 2010, Word 2010, and Visual Studio 2008.
  • It runs on a per-user or a per-document basis. For VBA, users open a document and run the tool from the Developer tab. For Visual Studio projects, the developer runs the tool from the Tools menu.
  • It adds comments in the code where it finds other potential issues.
  • It displays a summary and a detailed report of its findings after it completes its inspection.

The tool integrates with both Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications 7.0 (VBA 7) and Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. It includes a basic scanner where definitions and remediation links are updated from a central online location. It also generates a summary report and a details report. The summary includes the total lines of code scanned as well as total lines identified as potential candidates for object model changes. The details report includes the module name, line number, and links to remediation for each identified issue along with color-coded flags for impact guidance.

You cannot use this tool to inspect code from Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Access. However, you can use the tool to inspect Excel, PowerPoint, and Word code for interaction with the Outlook object model.

This tool checks Compatibility for code written for the older Office applications (Office 97, 2000, XP, 2003 and 2007) for use with Microsoft Office 2010.

Double click the exe, it will show you a path where you will need to extract the installer. Once done, you will have a msi file. While Installing this msi file, you will get an option to select the addins which you want to install.

Once the installation is complete, this will dump all the required files to the Program Files folder. (Note, you do not have shortcuts to invoke for this tool.)

To invoke this tool, launch any office application. For example, I will start the Microsoft Excel.

Once you do so, you will get an addin installation dialog. Surprisingly, the addins gives an unknown publisher for an inhouse Microsoft Tool.

You will need to enable this addin, so that it appears in the Ribbon menu control. For doing so, goto File Menu->Options-> Customize Ribbon. You will see that the Developer checkbox is un-checked. Select the checkbox (as shown in the below snapshot).

Once this is done, you will see a new Developer Menu appearing in the Ribbon controls.

Now you can inspect your VBA project for Office 2010 Compatibility. You can select these options (as shown in the screenshot below) while running your code inspection. This tool checks compatibility for code written for the legacy Office applications (Office 97, 2000, XP, 2003 and 2007) for use with Microsoft Office 2010.

At the end of the inspection, you will get a summary report on the scanned, depecated, changed and redesigned items.

You can also inspect a Visual Studio Code for its compatibility, All you need to do is., to enable the addin, Open the solution that you want to inspect in Visual Studio Tools for Office, On the Tools menu, click on Inspect VSTO code.

If the Inspector finds Changed, Deprecated, or Redesigned items in your code, you must debug your code and resolve any issues. As you debug your code, check for Office Code Compatibility Inspector comments above the lines that break your code. Those comments should help you to determine the underlying problem with that particular line of code.

I would also recommend you download and use the Assesment Tool (OEAT) to assess your machine for Office 2010 installation and Addin Compatibility.

This is a comprehensive Environment scanning tool (OEAT) for use in deploying Microsoft Office 2010.  This tool (along with documentation) assists a customer in the assessment phase of deployment. It identifies:

  • Currently installed applications and installation environment
  • Add-ins currently in use by Office clients

Problem Step Recorder (PSR.exe) – Screen Capture Tool

Sometimes when a user has an issue with his machine which needs an IT Pro help, the helpdesk always tries to resolve this error quickly, either involves in sending someone to the user’s desk or remote connection to the user’s machine to fix it.  When the user is not in office, its even harder to troubleshoot.

Most of the times, the user description of the problem may not be specific enough., and the support team may need some additional information from the user to understand the issue better.  It would be easy to understand the problem, if they could see what happened.  Thats where exactly, the Problem Step Recorder comes handy!

The problem Step recorder in Windows 7 lets the user save the steps which caused the issue, with the complete screenshots on what happened, along with the compiled html file. The user can then send this html file to the helpdesk and ease them understand the problem better.  The order of screenshots may help the helpdesk to identiy the issue more faster.

Other than Issue reporting, you can use this tool to create screencasts. Also, it proves really handy to create how-to tutorials and documents!!!

Invoking the Problem Step Recorder(psr) is as easy as typing psr (or to be in specific psr.exe) in the search bar, and hit the enter button.

On clicking the “Start Record” button, the program will start recording all the subsequent windows, key presses and mouse clicks. Now launch the program which is creating an issue. Observe that, the PSR shows the recording now in the status message in the dialog header.

Once you get the issues in the program, which you wanted to report… you can click on the Stop Record button. This will give you an option to save the report file.

This file contains all the steps and information that was recorded to help you describe the problem to others.  Using this report file, you can review the recorded problem steps and also review the recorded problem steps as a slide show.

Also, at the end of the report, an additional technical summary is created to help advanced users and developers.

What version of the .NET Framework is included in which version of the OS?

Its been quite sometime that, we have recieved questions on what version of the .NET Framework is included in which version of the OS? The main reason for this question is that, when the .NET Framework is installed as a part of the OS, it does not appear in the Programs and Features (or Add/Remove Programs) control panel. Peter Marcu has documented this in a nice pictoric representation. This is gonna be helpful to many!

Update : 6th August 2010 – Microsoft has posted an updated knowledge base article today with a unified list of install state and service pack level detection information for each of the currently released versions of the .NET Framework (1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and 4).  You can find the knowledge base article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318785

Aaron Stebner had also answered this in one of his mailbag questions, here is the answer which he gave!

The following is a complete list of which version of the .NET Framework is included in which version of the OS:

  • Windows XP Media Center Edition (Windows XP SP1) includes the .NET Framework 1.0 + SP2 as an OS component
  • Windows XP Media Center Edition (Windows XP SP2 and higher) includes the .NET Framework 1.0 + SP3 as an OS component.  On Windows XP Media Center Edition, the only way to get the .NET Framework 1.0 SP3 is to install Windows XP SP2 or higher.  There is not a standalone 1.0 SP3 installer for this edition of Windows XP.
  • Windows XP Tablet PC Edition (Windows XP SP1) includes the .NET Framework 1.0 + SP2 as an OS component
  • Windows XP Tablet PC Edition (Windows XP SP2 and higher) includes the .NET Framework 1.0 + SP3 as an OS component.  On Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, the only way to get the .NET Framework 1.0 SP3 is to install Windows XP SP2 or higher.  There is not a standalone 1.0 SP3 installer for this edition of Windows XP.
  • Windows Server 2003 (all x86 editions) includes the .NET Framework 1.1 as an OS component; 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003 do not include a version of the .NET Framework as an OS component
  • Windows Vista (all editions) includes the .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0 as OS components  3.0 can be added or removed via the Programs and Fatures control panel.

  • Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 SP1 (all editions) includes the .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 and 3.0 SP1 as OS components.  The .NET Framework 3.0 SP1 is not installed by default and must be added via the Programs and Features control panel though.
  • Windows Server 2008 SP2 (all editions) includes the .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2 as OS components.  The .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 is not installed by default and must be added via the Programs and Features control panel though.
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 (all editions) includes the .NET Framework 3.5.1 as an OS component.  This means you will get the .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 plus a few post 3.5 SP1 bug fixes.  3.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 can be added or removed via the Programs and Features control panel.
  • Windows 7 (all editions) includes the .NET Framework 3.5.1 as an OS component.  This means you will get the .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 plus a few post 3.5 SP1 bug fixes.  3.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 can be added or removed via the Programs and Features control panel

In addition, the .NET Framework shipped with the following versions of Windows but not as truly integrated OS components:

  • Windows XP Home and Professional SP1 includes the MSI-based .NET Framework 1.0 + SP2 in the Additional Components folder on the installation CD.  It is not an OS component on this OS.
  • Windows XP Home and Professional SP2 includes the MSI-based .NET Framework 1.1 + SP1 in the Additional Components folder on the installation CD.  It is not an OS component on this OS.
  • Windows XP Home and Professional SP3 includes the MSI-based .NET Framework 1.1 + SP1 in the Additional Components folder on the installation CD.  It is not an OS component on this OS.
  • Windows Server 2003 R2 includes the MSI-based .NET Framework 2.0.  It appears in Add/Remove Windows Components as an OS component, but selecting it simply invokes the MSI-based installer.  The MSI can be repaired and removed using Add/Remove Programs regardless of whether it is installed via the standalone MSI or via the Add/Remove Windows Components UI.

Steps to Install the Silverlight Client for Facebook

Facebook LogoThis application brings together the many compelling platform capabilities of Silverlight 4 into a rich out-of-browser application in the familiar context of Facebook. In order to install Silverlight Client for Facebook, you will need to install the Silverlight 4 beta first.

To install the Silverlight 4 beta for Developers, Select the appropriate Operating System below,

Windows Runtime or Mac Runtime
If you installed the tools above, you will get the developer runtime and there is no need to install again. These downloads are being made available for test machines for the Windows and Mac platforms for your applications.

Once the installation is complete, Click here to install the Silverlight Client for Facebook. You will see the below dialog,

Once you agree the license agreement and click on install, The installation progress bar will reach its 100% and then show the below dialog. This defines the entry point (shortcuts) for the application. You can choose Desktop Shortcut, if you need.

Once the installation completes and you launch the application shortcut, you will need to authorize this Client to fetch your Facebook feeds and images. You can enter your credentials and authorize.

Once the Authorization is done, the home screen of the Facebook client Appears. You will see the Silverlight Ui richness. This is a typical Silverlight app, which gives this client an Out of Browser Xperience.

Updating the status is real simple, just click on the “Whats on your mind”, you will see the below dialog

The photo album looks more attractive, and it immediate pulls out a collage of pics. You can choose one and view it as well.

  

When you select Events tab, now you have an option to sort the events upon dates, sort by month, and even the past events. I loved the calender view in this client. Also when you click on the People/Friends tab, it now gives you a alphabetical order of all your friends. You can select a friend, and his feed will appear on the right side. This is one of the Sooper Cool feature of this client.

The last funntasstic feature is the inbox., The messages in this client looks quite similar to that of an email chain. More good, the live feeds of the other person who had messaged you, appears in the right side. This is an amazing feature.

Want to install Office 2010? – Use this Assessment Tool (OEAT)

This is a comprehensive Environment scanning tool (OEAT) for use in deploying Microsoft Office 2010.  This tool (along with documentation) assists a customer in the assessment phase of deployment. It identifies:

When you execute the downloaded exe, it wil show a dialog to extract the files. (Select a folder, where the application has permission to write the files into)

Once extracted, there will be 2 files in the folder (OEAT.exe and Readme). On executing the OEAT.exe, you will see the Assesment Tool,

Use the option 1, if you are running it for an individual machine. Administrators can choose Option 2, to run a Wizard for advanced configuration like passive scan, UNC Path, Hidden execution options.  Invoking this button, will first scan your machine and create a XML file report and create it in the same location of the executable. Check a sample xml file below.

Once the scan is complete (either by Option 1 or 2)., you can compile the report. This will compress the collected data, compile them into readable format and gives the output in a excel file. On clicking the button “Compile Results”

You can Review the excel sheet (which is present in the same folder of the OEAT.exe), to analyze the follow different parameters,

  1. Machine Summary Report
  2. All Installed Addin
  3. Installed Addins which were not shipped with Office
  4. Disk Space
  5. 32bit vs. 64bit
  6. Antivirus State
