Tears of Joy – Moto360 can now talk to my iPhone!

Google made an announcement earlier in the day, that iOS is an officially supported operating system for Android Wear. Users with an iPhone 5, 5C, 5S, 6, or 6 Plus running iOS 8.2 and above will be able to pair with Android Wear devices.

You can download the iOS app here, and follow the instructions to setup your watch. The notification works really well. Some of the actions are missing; for e.g. Replying to an SMS or a WhatsApp notification with voice etc. There is also a noticeable lag on the Moto360 when I tried.

As of now you can check important info like phone calls, messages, and notifications from your favorite apps. Hook up with Google Fit – Set fitness goals, and get daily and weekly views of your progress. The watch can automatically tracks walking and running, and even measures your heart rate. Not sure, if the data syncs up with Apple Health. The Google Now Cards brings in some neat addition to provide timely tips like when to leave for appointments, current traffic info, and flight status. Just say “Ok Google” to ask questions or set reminders.

The smartwatch platforms have been lock-in devices. If you have an Android phone, you had to get an Android Wear watch, and if you have an iPhone you had to get an Apple Watch. However, things are now changing. Thanks to the Android Wear App.

I have always been a big fan of the Moto360. Its been a piece of art for me.  I am now glad that these two favourite gadgets of mine can talk to each other. Yaay..!

iPhone 6 Review: Is it really worth an Upgrade?

The all new Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus featuring stunning 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch Retina HD displays, are going to release tomorrow in India. The sale starts at 12:00 Tonight. The Economic Times reports, Apple is shipping 50,000-55,000 units of its new iPhones to India in the first phase to ensure there is adequate supplies for Thursday midnight’s launch.

According to reports, there has been over 25,000 units pre-ordered which has stepped up Apple’s retail distribution in India this year. Most of the multi-brand chain stores and E-commerce portals like Amazon and Flipkart have opened up for pre-orders and that has certainly helped the numbers grow up.This is also the first time that Apple will have midnight sales of its new launch, a global practice and retailers are pulling out all stops to ensure it goes off smoothly and everyone who pre-booked an iPhone 6/iPhone 6 Plus gets their hand on it on day one itself.

The iPhone 6 Plus has been in news ever since the release in the US; mostly for not-so-good reasons. To begin with the Bend-gate, reports of iPhone 6 Plus getting bent. There were too many trolls on the same; however, apple confirmed that, there were only 9 units reported with this behaviour out of the billion sales made. As always, Apple announced iPhone 6 and 6 Plus as one of the best iPhone ever made. Well, from the looks, it may not be the best looking iPhones. Let’s see what’s in store.

Hardware, Look and Feel:

The new iPhones feature a precision unibody enclosure of anodized aluminum that conforms seamlessly with the shaped glass of the display, resulting in a completely smooth and continuous surface. The antenna inlays look very clumsy; however, this phone feels very good than its looks. You definitely need to hold one to realize how ergonomic and good it feels.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are engineered to be the thinnest ever, delivering a bigger display in a design that is still comfortable to hold and easy to use. Despite being big, it fits really well in your palm.  Both models include the Apple-designed A8 chip with second generation 64-bit desktop-class architecture for fast performance and power efficiency.

Both models include the M8 motion coprocessor that gathers motion data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, compass and the new barometer, which senses air pressure to provide relative elevation. The M8 motion coprocessor can continuously measure your motion data, even when the device is asleep, saving battery life for fitness apps that use the sensors all day.

The performance on the iPhone 6 is smooth and this dual core can give other Quad-Core Android Phones run for money. The App launch speed, Gaming performance, Consistent graphics, Spotlight search work slick.

iPhone 6 features a stunning 4.7-inch Retina® HD display with 1334 x 750 resolution, providing 38 percent more viewing area than iPhone 5s, while iPhone 6 Plus features an even bigger 5.5-inch Retina HD display with 1920 x 1080 resolution, providing 88 percent more viewing area and nearly three times the pixels than iPhone 5s. The Retina HD displays offer advanced technologies including higher contrast for deeper blacks and dual-domain pixels for more accurate colors at wider viewing angles.

The Audio performance on the iPhone has gone better. The volume is a little higher than the older versions. However, with Apple owning Beats Audio now, I expected something even more remarkable.

From the looks of it, the awkward protruding Lens on the rear can be a turn off to few people. Also, None of the earlier generation iPhones had lens protrude, it was always a flat back panel. However, the performance of the camera, makes you forget this.

The iSight camera gets even better with a new sensor featuring Focus Pixels for faster autofocus, making it easier to quickly capture any moment. High-definition video on iPhone improves with faster frame rates up to 60fps for 1080p video and 240fps for slo-mo, as well as continuous autofocus, cinematic video stabilization and time-lapse video. The audio capture is impressive as well.

iPhone 6 Plus users will also benefit from optical image stabilization technology that compensates for hand shake in low light and works with iOS 8 to reduce subject motion. The FaceTime HD front camera now captures over 80 percent more light with a new sensor, larger f/2.2 aperture and advanced new features including burst mode and HDR video.

The slo-Mo is one of my most favourite. It makes you instantly fall in love with it. Check out this video I shot on the iPhone:

A slow-motion clip shot on an iPhone at a beach in Goa.

Posted by iclickd on Friday, 9 October 2015

Pictures are really crisp, colors are wonderful and most importantly, iPhone cameras are very snappy and quick on shutter. The low-light performance of the phone isn’t too great. However, if I am buying a phone, just for the camera features I would buy the Nokia Lumia with Pureview instead.

Software Platform:

If you are wondering, how well the Apple’s Software scales to this big screen sizes, the answer is wonderfully well. The new iPhones come with iOS 8 featuring a simpler, faster and more intuitive user experience with new Messages and Photos features, predictive typing for Apple’s QuickType keyboard and Family Sharing. Read more about the iOS 8 Features here. Your messages and alerts live along your daily agenda when you pull down for notifications.

The iOS 8 also introduces ‘Apple Pay’, an easier way to simply and securely make payments with just the touch of a finger. I personally love the concept and most importantly the attention to detail in implementation. Apple has not just introduced the technology, but an ecosystem. Read this article to understand on how Apple Pay can transform the Mobile Payment business. With Apple Pay, Users can pay securely and conveniently in stores by simply holding the phone near the contactless reader while keeping a finger on Touch ID. This hasn’t been implemented as of now; it would arrive as a free update to the iOS 8 in the US. There is still no official report on its availability outside US.

With iOS 8, motion data from M8 motion coprocessor appears in the Health app so you can see how many flights of stairs you’ve climbed, or how far you’ve walked or run. Developers can use CoreMotion APIs that take advantage of M8 and HealthKit to create apps that help you take better care of your health and fitness.

The iPhone’s single button has more functions than ever and it works pretty well. Pressing once and holding unlocks the phone with your fingerprint Touch ID, The double press brings up the task switcher for multitasking between apps or to close any running apps, A long press wakes up Siri, and a gentle double tap brings in reachability to help ease one hand access. (shown below).

Those who love raw performance and higher level of customizations will never appreciate iPhones. In this version, the build could’ve been better. Siri may not be as good as others. I personally like Google Now better. Cortana does a very very neat job as well. The custom keyboard is still not that great. The Auto-correct is way behind than the Androids. The home screen is still a bunch of icons and if you like this user-experience, you would be fine. However, if you moving from an Android or a Windows Phone, this may be a little strange to begin with. However, the responsiveness of the iPhone is very consistent unlike the other flagships devices.

The Health ID is a great thought and implementation as well. The day to day experience on the iPhone gets wonderful. Thanks to the bunch of relevant applications on the AppStore. Third party apps work better on an iPhone than their own devices. For eg: I still love using Google Maps on an iPhone than an Android; so does the Microsoft OneNote as well.

Summing up, iPhone 6 is crafted really well. If you are reading this review till here, you must’ve already made a decision on whether you want to be in the Apple Ecosystem. Coming to the important question with which we began this article, Is it worth an upgrade? The answer is a partial Yes. The reason being partial is, it makes sense to move to iPhone 6 from a iPhone 4 or a iPhone 4S or even iPhone 5. If you are an iPhone 5S user, it doesn’t make so much of difference to you, until features like Apple Pay and its security chip means a lot to you.

If you are deciding between a iPhone 6 and an iPhone 6 Plus, I would vote for a 6 Plus for the sheer presence of the optical stabilizer in the camera department.  Again, iPhone 6 feels good as a phone, whereas, 6 Plus feels more a Phablet. Both these devices are excellent when it comes to user experience, camera and most importantly the battery life.

If you are looking at buying a new phone and are confused between a iPhone, Android or a Windows Phone, then the choice becomes even clearer. If I were in a market looking at buying a phone, I would look out for an Ecosystem. I mean, a platform of devices which can work along with your Phone. For eg: An iPhone, Apple TV, Apple Watch and a Mac. or even a Android Phone, Nexus Player or Chromecast, Android Wear etc. So if you own any one of them, picking others are going to be easy. At-least that’s how I would recommend.

Highlights and Features of the iPhone OS 4.0 – The 7 Tent Poles

Update – 7th June, 2010 – With over 100 new features, the free iOS 4 Software Update will be available. for the 3GS, 3G — but again, not all features will be supported in the 3G — and iPod touch… upgrades for all these products will be free on June 21st..!

Today a few hours back, Steve Jobs gave a developer preview of the all new iPhone OS 4.0. There was a lot of expectation from Developers/Consumers on this release, as the earlier editions of the Operating System lacked some key features.

In this meet, Apple released a framework called Accelerate with over 2,000 APIs for hardware accelerated math functions. The iPhone OS 4.0 OS delivers over 1500 new APIs and over 100 new user features to play around with. Developers can now do the following through their application, Access calendar and photo library, Can put SMS inside their apps, quick look. You also have options to create playlists, 5x digital zoom, tap to focus, places in photos, home screen wallpaper, file & delete mail search results, Bluetooth keyboards, edit from outbox, calDAV invitations, manage cell data only setting, rotate photos.

Of all these 100 features…Apple talked about 7 significant features in this event,  which Steve calls it “Tent Pole features”

Tent Pole Feature 1 – Multitasking

Steve started explaining about this saying,

“We weren’t the first to this party but we’re gonna’ be the best. It’s really easy to implement multitasking in a way that really drains battery life, and it’s really easy to implement it in a way that reduces the performance of the foreground application. So if you don’t do it just right, your phone’s gonna feel sluggish and your battery life will go way down. We figured out how to implement this for 3rd party apps and avoid these things. It took us a little longer, but we figured out how to do it. “

For example, looking at a Mail message which has a URL to a website, which takes you to the browser when you click on the button, the window raises up and shows the entire app you’re running across the bottom. It also lets you choose which app to go back to, anytime you want you can go home by clicking the home button. Icons are along the bottom like the home row, and you can flick through them.

After analyzing over tens of thousands of applications, Apple team distilled the services that they need to multitask in the background. In iPhone OS 4, they’re providing those services as APIs to developers. This enables developers to create apps which can multitask while the system preserves battery life

A simple demo was shown of an application Pandora – With iPhone OS 4, Pandora can continue to play music in the background while you switch between apps and you can even use iPod controls on the lock screen to control Pandora. You can listen to Pandora while heading over to Safari; catch up on reading, performance of the browser is good even with Pandora in the background. Double tap on the home button while locked and the iPod controls can let you play/pause, skip, etc.

With VoIP, until today, navigating away from Skype means you go offline. With iPhone OS 4.0 When you’re on Skype now, you can switch to another app and stay on the call; you can still receive calls, texts, etc.

Two classes of apps that want to use your location in the background:

  1. Turn by turn direction applications, like TomTom – Until now, if you left an app like TomTom, it would stop tracking your location and stop giving you directions, but now you can keep tracking your location with GPS in the background while listening to music, etc. GPS uses a fair bit of power but that’s OK for an app like this cuz it’s usually in your car and charging.
  2. Second class of app is social networking applications, like Loopt – IPhone OS 4, provides a great solution for these apps that doesn’t require GPS to be on all the time, using cell towers. Our baseband is always connected to a cell tower, knows when you’ve moved from one to another, when we know you’ve switched between cell towers, we can wake up your app and tell it you’ve moved.

With all these apps, Apple says that, they take privacy very seriously. Taking privacy several steps further in iPhone OS 4, You now have an indicator right on the status bar if any app is asking for your location. also adding fine-grained settings so you can enable or disable location on a per-app basis. if any application has asked for your location in the last 24 hours, there’s an indicator next to that application.

Also, you now have Push Notifications enabled in Iphone OS 4.0; Local notifications can show you when TV shows are going to start. Certain apps take a while to do things, like Flickr uploading photos. These apps can run in Background while you continue to work on your iPhone. You also now have a service for fast-app switching. This will enable the developers to allow apps to move to the background and idle there without using any CPU. If you’re playing a game, it just sits in the background. No need to restore the state, just can start playing again when you switch to it

Tent Pole Feature 2 – Folders

This was one feature which many people requested in various forums. As people are downloading more & more apps, they have to flick from page to page to page to launch an application. There was a need for better way to organize them, Folders exactly fits the need.

Just Push finger on an app, they start to jiggle. Drag one on top of another and it instantly makes a folder. It also automatically names the folder based on the category these apps came from on the app store, but you can rename it if you want. Icon changes as you drag apps in, the folder icon has mini-icons of all the apps that are inside of it. You can have as many folders as you’d like. You can drag your folders to the dock too so you can access the folder wherever. Drag and drop UI is what they call.

You can now have over 2,000 apps on your iPhone if you want.!

Tent Pole Feature 3 – Enhanced Email

IPhone OS 4.0 provides a lot of features to fit the need, The biggest ones are these listed below,

  • Unified inbox – Muitiple emails arrive in a single inbox.
  • Multiple exchange accounts – You can now configure more than one exchange Mailboxes
  • Fast inbox switching
  • Threaded messages – Now has a new notification icon to distinguish this.
  • Open attachments – get an attachment in an e-mail, tap on it, open it with an app from the app store

Tent Pole Feature 4 – Adding iBooks to iPhone OS 4

Pretty much the same concept as introduced in an iPad. Bookshelf looks the same, store looks the same. One cool option is that, you can Buy once and read anywhere. This means, you can buy a book and read it both on iPhone/iPod touch and in an iPad. You also now have an option to wirelessly sync page and bookmarks between devices in iPhone OS 4.

Tent Pole Feature 5 – Enterprise features

Stats say that, more than 80% of fortune 100 companies are using iPhones. You now have

  1. Even better data protection, i.e., encrypt all of your e-mail and attachments with your pin code. Apple is making APIs available so developers can encrypt data inside their apps too
  2. Another huge request was, mobile device management – if you have an enterprise solution to deploy lots of phones within the company, now iPhone OS 4 helps to manage that
  3. Wireless app distribution – if your company has built a custom application, the employee doesn’t need to plug in anymore to get the app the company can wirelessly distribute the app anywhere in the world from their own servers
  4. Multiple exchange accounts on a single phone
  5. Exchange Server 2010 support
  6. SSL VPN support – Supports both Juniper and Cisco VPN Software.

Tent Pole Feature 6 – Game center

Gaming is extremely popular on iPhone and iPod touch, more than 50,000 game & entertainment titles. Now, you can challenge your friends to games, automatic matchmaking can automatically find others of similar ability in a game and put you all into a game. You also have Leaderboards, achievements etc. Summing up, Game Center is a social gaming network.

Tent Pole Feature 7 – iAd

Mobile advertising built right into iPhone OS 4. Today, there are lots of apps on the app store: some are free, some are paid, lots of reasonably priced. Developers need to find ways to make money and Apple likes to help. Some devs are putting advertising in their apps, and for lack of a more elegant way.  iAd is all about helping developers make money from advertising to keep free apps free. This is a pretty serious opportunity. The ads keep you in your application. When you click on ads in an app, it doesn’t yank you out of your app interactive video content without ever taking you out of your application and the user can return anytime they want. Its built right into the iPhone OS, and for developers to add this to their apps is really simple. Apple will sell and host the ads, give developers an “industry standard” 60% of the revenues. In the preview presentation, there was a demo shown of an advertisement which was created for ‘Target’, it’s just an HTML5 animated ad, and the experience is worthwhile.

Summing up the tent poles – multitasking, folders, enhanced mail, iBooks, much deeper enterprise features, preview of Game Kit, and iAd are the features which can be expected in the iPhone OS 4.0. These are just 7 of the over 100 user features and over 1500 new developer APIs. The Developer preview released today.

Developers can start testing it now and using these new APIs, get them at

The end user can get this for iPhone and iPod touch by around June/July. People who have an iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3rd generation – they will run pretty much everything. For iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2nd generation, they will run “many things” but there are some features which will not run because hardware doesn’t support them, like multitasking.

Open Data Protocol (OData) SDK for Objective C (iPhone-Mac) – Download

Yesterday at MIX10, The Interop team at Microsoft presented about how Open Data Protocol (OData) can contribute to a more programmable web through demos consuming a Netflix OData feed in various scenarios. They also announced a series of new and updated OData SDKs for PHP, Java, Objective C (iPhone & Mac,) and JavaScript (AJAX and Palm WebOS).

The SDKs can be found on the website!

OData enables data integration across a broad range of clients, servers, services, and tools. OData builds on a few conventions, popularized by AtomPub, to using REST-based data services. These services allow resources, identified using Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) and defined in an abstract data model, to be read and edited by web clients using simple HTTP messages. For more details, consult the protocol documentation on the OData site where you will also find a list of services and products that are already using OData. Read “Open Data for the Open Web” by Doug Purdy for more perspective on OData.

Open Data Protocol

They released a new version of the OData SDK for PHP (previously called Toolkit for PHP with ADO.NET/WCF Data Services). This version includes new features like the capability of handling large result sets of data using an automated paging mechanism and a new sample built on top of an OData feed exposing the Netflix catalog, which we are covering in detail in this blog post. Link for more detail on the OData SDK for PHP

OData SDK for Iphone Objective C

They also announced the new OData SDK for Objective C which facilitates the development of applications for iPhone and Mac OS X connecting with OData services. This early version is a Community Technology Preview (CTP) and it supports read operations only and it has been tested on a limited set of scenarios. The download includes a sample iPhone application to browse the new NetFlix OData service hosted in Azure!

The current release of “OData SDK for Objective C (iPhone-Mac)” is a Community Technology Preview (CTP). It supports read operations only and it has been tested on a limited set of scenarios.
