Android Scripting Environment (ASE) – Edit and Execute Scripts on Device

The Android Scripting Environment (ASE) brings scripting languages to Android by allowing you to edit and execute scripts and interactive interpreters directly on the Android device. These scripts have access to many of the APIs available to full-fledged Android applications, but with a greatly simplified interface that makes it easy to get things done.

Scripts can be run interactively in a terminal, in the background, or via Locale. Python, Perl, JRuby, Lua, BeanShell, JavaScript, Tcl, and shell are currently supported..!

Currently, the ASE project provides:

  • Scripting language interpreters that have been compiled to run on the Android platform.
  • An abstraction layer above the Android API that simplifies common use cases (e.g. reading sensors, displaying dialogs, changing settings, etc.)
  • IPC to the abstraction layer from processes that do not have access to the native Android APIs.
  • An on-device development environment for supported scripting languages.

Read more and Download the Android Scripting Environment here – http://code.google.com/p/android-scripting/

ASE is designed for developers and is alpha quality software. To install ASE, you will need to enable the “Unknown sources” option in your device’s “Application” settings.

How Secure is Google Apps for Enterprise?

Google Apps is a web-based suite of messaging and collaboration applications. It’s all hosted by Google, and designed with security and reliability in mind, saving your company the frustrations and hassles of managing traditional IT solutions yourself.

“Well, How Secure is Google Apps??” I reckon, most of us ask this question whenever someone talks about the cost saving features and other capabilities Google Apps provide. Indeed, there is nothing wrong in worrying about the security of ‘your’ Data.  Also, with so many corporates Going Google, this question become a very valid one.

Google has released a white paper to give enterprise customers greater transparency into Google’s security practices, policies, and technology involving Google Apps.

Download the Google Apps security white paper to understand more [pdf format]

Google Team says, “Feeling comfortable storing data in the cloud involves trusting a cloud services provider and the practices and policies they have in place. In today’s ultra-connected, web-capable world, understanding how data will be protected is ultimately more meaningful than knowing it is physically located in one data center or another.”

Also, Google stores customer data in fragments across multiple servers and across multiple data centers to both enhance reliability and provide greater security than can be achieved by storing all data on a single server. When only fragments are kept in any one place, the chance that a possible physical or computer-based compromise could result in the loss of meaningful information is greatly reduced. Google Doodle – Honoring Dennis Gabor on his Birthday

Check out the Google home page today. The Doodle celeberates the 110th Birthday of Dennis Gabor. He is a Hungarian-born electrical engineer who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1971 for his invention of holography, a system of lensless, three-dimensional photography that has many applications.

In 1947 he conceived the idea of holography and, by employing conventional filtered-light sources, developed the basic technique. Because conventional light sources generally provided either too little light or light that was too diffuse, holography did not become commercially feasible until the demonstration, in 1960, of the laser, which amplifies the intensity of light waves.

New Options added to Google Docs!

Google has made some improvements to the existing Google Docs to make it more productive, Stable and User Friendly. In spreadsheets, you’ll now find a formula editing bar, cell auto-complete, drag-and-drop columns and other features not possible with older browser technologies.

Check the screenshots below where you see that the address bar is enabled for editing.

Editable Formula Bar - New Google Docs

The earlier edition did not have this option (See below) :

Non Editable Formula Bar

In Google Docs Documents, now you have a margin ruler, better numbering and bullets and easier image placement options.

Also, a big improvement is made to the document upload feature so moving files from your computer to the cloud is easier now. Imported documents retain their original structure more accurately, so you dont have to fix formatting like bullets and text alignment. New browser technologies like faster JavaScript processing have made it possible for us to speed up Google Docs significantly. Even very large spreadsheets are fast to work with in your browser now. Applications that run this fast feel like desktop applications but have the unique advantages of being in the cloud.

The Google Docs’ collaboration capabilities have extended too, with support for up to 50 people working together at once, and in documents, you can now see other people’s edits as they happen character-by-character. And now you can also collaborate on flow charts, diagrams and other schematics in real time with a new editor for drawings on Google Docs.

With Google Docs drawings you can,

  • Edit drawings online in real time with anyone you choose, and invite others to view your edits in real time
  • Chat with others who are editing your drawing, from within the drawings editor.
  • Publish drawings online to the world as images, or download them in standard formats.
  • Insert text, shapes, arrows, scribbles, and images from your hard drive or from the Web.
  • Lay out drawings precisely with alignment guides, snap to grid, and auto distribution.
  • Insert drawings into other Google documents, spreadsheets, or presentations using the web clipboard, then tweak them inline

For the complete list on What’s new on Google Docs read this article – http://www.google.com/google-d-s/whatsnew.html

If you do not see the newer edition of Google Docs, Login to Gdocs and see the top right corner, where you have an option to try the new one. (see below screenshot)

Have you ever forgot to send an Attachment in an Email?

How many times has this happened to you? Whenever you are in a hurry to reply/send an email., only after hitting the Send button, you realize that.. the attachment was not made! Generally, you tend to send the attachment in another email!

Most of us have faced this and so did I .. but I got a different Experience yesterday. I was writing an email asking all my friends to try out the DOSBox Software. While I was about to hit the send button, I got a message box from Gmail saying.. I have not made the attachments. At First go.,  it sounded Wierd.. and crazy! Then when I scrolled through my email, i realized that.. I had used the sentence “Please find attached in this email”. While I pressed the send button, Gmail was able to parse this sentence and prompted me a message box. I was amazed to see this because, this was happening from a web browser client and not a standalone Application.!

Gmail Attachment Message

I reckon, few people will start speculating that.. Gmail also reads all our emails now and the emails are no more a “secure” mode of communication. However, this is a very cool concept., and I’m sure.. this will be really useful to most of us!
