Lightroom is now available on iPad. Thank you Creative Cloud

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is now available not only on PC and Mac but also on mobile and web, so you can edit anywhere and automatically sync your photos between Lightroom on your desktop and on your iPad. You can download the Lightroom mobile app from the iTunes App Store and start syncing your photos right away.

If you have an iPad 2 or later running iOS 7 or later, you can run Lightroom mobile. (According to Adobe, an iPhone version will appear later this year; an Android version is also in the works, but the company gave no release window.)

Lightroom mobile’s key feature is its synchronization with the desktop version of Lightroom (which I’ll refer to from here on as “Lightroom desktop” for clarity). Version 5.4 for OS X or Windows, available now, introduces a new option to wirelessly sync individual collections—but not Smart Collections, alas—to Lightroom mobile.

Sync over WifiLightroom mobile can also import images from the iPad’s Camera Roll and sync them back to Lightroom desktop, saving you the effort of manually importing those photos via USB.

Lightroom desktop creates Smart Previews of photos marked for sync and uploads them to the Creative Cloud servers. Smart Previews retain much of the editing options and detail of the source images (even raw files) but occupy much less storage space. In Lightroom mobile, the app downloads low-resolution previews for display in its Grid layout, and when an image is opened it pulls down the higher-resolution Smart Preview file (enabling you to zoom in to check details if needed).

Make a change to a photo on the iPad, and that change should appear in Lightroom desktop within seconds, removing the need to export or import images. Edits you make to the photo synchronize back to Creative Cloud and Lightroom desktop when you close the image—in fact, only a small XML file describing the edits is transmitted, which is why updates appear in the desktop and mobile applications quickly.

Lightroom mobile can share images via any of iOS’s core services, including Messages, Mail, Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, and AirDrop. A slideshow feature is also built-in, which turns the app into a spontaneous portfolio. Adobe is also introducing Lightroom Web View, which makes your synced collection available on the Web.

Summing up, Lightroom mobile extends your existing workflows beyond the desktop, allowing you to utilize your iPad to review and edit your images and have the changes sync back to your Lightroom catalog at home, including access images in your Lightroom catalog, make selects, reject unworthy photos, apply a preset, fine tunes your images, using the Basic panel and import new photos directly from the camera roll.

Adobe Asia Pacific’s Top Creative Students – Get To the Stardom

Adobe® Systems Incorporated today announced the launch of the second annual Adobe® Asia Pacific School Innovation Awards. The company will be accepting submissions starting immediately. Inaugurated in 2009, the program generated extensive interest in its first year, with 550 entries from across Asia Pacific. This year the competition will once again be open to 14-19 year old students in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

Aiming to provide a platform for the brightest creative minds in the region to display their talents and digital media skills, this competition also serves as a showcase for the next generation of creative professionals across Asia Pacific to demonstrate their ideas and work to an international audience.

In 2009, Australia’s Marco Riotto did his mentor, school and country proud by walking away as the “Best-of-Best” winner.

With two winners in the “Print and Web category” and four finalists, the Greater China Region continued to show why it is one of the fastest growing creative hubs in the world with the most number of top entries in the inaugural competition.

With Taiwan submitting 60% of total entries for last year’s competition, the high participation rate was indicative of the success of recent government initiatives to boost and develop the country’s creative industry.

Last year there were 51 entries from India, from which 3 were selected among 45 shortlisted entries.

“Last year’s competition saw the region’s participants pushing the envelope and displaying an astonishing degree of creative talent, setting the bar high for the 2010 Adobe Asia Pacific Innovation Awards,” said Mark Phibbs, Senior Director Marketing Adobe APAC. “Creative industries are vital to the economic well-being of all Asia Pacific countries. This significant contribution is demonstrated by the importance governments place on educating and encouraging digital media skills and development in their nations’ youth. In 2010, we hope that young people across the Asia Pacific region will continue to surprise us with their ability to create and we look forward to receiving even more extraordinary works from tomorrow’s creative leaders.”

With an Open Theme, students this year have been presented with the luxury and challenge of a blank canvas and are encouraged to develop and illustrate an idea or story through their submission. Students may compete in groups or as individuals in three categories:

  • Graphic and Print Design — Appropriate entries include illustrations, postcards, logos, labels, packaging, photography, yearbooks, advertising, magazines, posters, brochures, books and newsletters..
  • Web Design and Development — Appropriate entries include web sites, blogs, interactive CDs/DVDs, animation, learning objects and mobile design.
  • Film and Video— Appropriate entries include live action projects, documentaries, short films, motion graphics, animations and public service announcements..

Selection of Winners and Prizes

There will be two finalists and one winner in each category, as well as one winner from every region selected by a team of Adobe judges.

  • Category Winners — Category winners will receive a copy of an education version of Adobe Creative Suite® 5 Master Collection software (estimated  retail price US$999), a Hewlett Packard Elitebook 8440w Mobile Workstation (estimated retail price US$1,649)  and a certificate of commendation.
  • Category Finalists — Category finalists will receive a copy of an education version of Adobe Creative Suite 5  Design Premium (estimated retail price US$599), Web Premium (estimated retail price US$599) or Production Premium software (estimated  retail price   US$599) and a certificate of commendation.
  • School — Schools of Category Winners will receive 20 licenses of Adobe Creative Suite 5 Master Collection software for use on up to 20 seats in the school.
  • Mentors — Mentors or teachers of Category Winners will receive a copy of an education version of Adobe Creative Suite 5 Master Collection software (estimated retail price US$999).
  • Regional Winners — There will also be one winner from each of the five regions defined as:  (1) Australia and New Zealand, (2) Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, (3) India, (4) South Korea, and (4) China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Regional winners will each receive an education version  of Adobe Creative Suite 5 Master Collection software (estimated retail price US$999), a Canon EOS 500D Kit with EFS 18-55IS lens (estimated retail price US$600) and a certificate of commendation.

Office 2010 Protected View and Adobe Reader Protected Mode – Sandbox

Beginning in Office 2010 you might have observed that, when you open a document / spreadsheet / presentation, it first opens the same for reading in a Protected View, only on your consent it further takes you to edit the same. This implementation was made using a Windows Sandboxing Technique.

Now, Adobe is working towards implementing a similar Sandbox technology ‘Protected Mode’  for its reader products. Protected Mode is based on Microsoft’s Practical Windows Sandboxing technique. Adobe has been working closely with Microsoft Office security team and the Chrome team at Google, as well as third-party consultancies and other external stakeholders to leverage their sandboxing knowledge and experience.

An excerpt from the official blog post says –

“With Adobe Reader Protected Mode enabled (it will be by default), all operations required by Adobe Reader to display the PDF file to the user are run in a very restricted manner inside a confined environment, the “sandbox.” Should Adobe Reader need to perform an action that is not permitted in the sandboxed environment, such as writing to the user’s temporary folder or launching an attachment inside a PDF file using an external application (e.g. Microsoft Word), those requests are funneled through a “broker process,” which has a strict set of policies for what is allowed and disallowed to prevent access to dangerous functionality. “

Personally, I have been a biggest fan of User Account Control (UAC) ever since it was implemented in Windows Operating System. Focusing on Standard User Environment always gives various benefits w.r.t Security and stability. The modern OSes have demanded this change in the way, applications are built and developed. Office and Adobe compete on many fronts in the industry., but they’ve put all that aside when it comes to helping protect customers from security issues.

Its really good to see 2 big players share their solutions and approach; This definitely gives the all needed – “End User Experience”.
